For the freethinker amongst you. Inspired by Simone de Beauvoir’s 1943 existential novel of the same name, “She Came to Stay” is a gender neutral perfume that echoes the evolving nature of our sense of self when faced with a world on the edge of change.
The semi-autobiographical novel tells the story of de Beauvoir's relationship with the French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre around the turn of the decade of a 1940s Paris. Alongside de Beauvoir's second novel, this highly influential novel is arguably considered to mark the start of modern feminism.
This perfume explores notions of freedom and sexuality that the protagonist pursued by taking a number of classical fragrance notes and giving them a unique twist that echoes the freethinking spirit of de Beauvoir and Sartre.

She Came to Stay is a warm fougere fragrance that opens with deep woody notes of labdanum, patchouli and oakmoss. Within minutes and contrary to classic perfumes, this olfactory state quickly transcends into an ephemeral dreamlike forest of cedarwood and vetiver before finally opening into a lightness edged with a touch of basil and lemon.

Kirtland Ash's artwork for “She Came to Stay” is meant to question our perceptions about our relationship with our self and those around us. The collages made using found materials are about interpreting our perceptions of identity; both of ourselves and of the other. Of how we can find fragments of the familiar within the unknown. It is very much about knowing who we are as individuals.

The Artist
A self-taught artist, Kirtland Ash began his career in 1997, in Los Angeles, painting detailed, abstract images. His recent work is primarily collage, fusing text and images on paper to explore the human form.
